Paths and Screens, Built in Stages
Side yards and utility corners suffer from two predictable problems: concentrated roof runoff turns narrow footpaths into slick clay ruts, and trash carts or air-conditioning condensers sit in plain view of your patio table. Because excavating a 40-foot path and erecting a 12-foot privacy wall in one weekend will exhaust any solo DIYer, we break these projects into independent 10-foot and 6-foot stages.
Mandatory Pre-Work Rule: Before driving a single 18-inch rebar timber spike or digging a post hole, contact 811 (Call Before You Dig) at least 3 business days ahead. Residential fiber-optic drops and shallow irrigation feeds frequently run fewer than 8 inches below side-yard turf.
The 20-Foot Drained Side-Yard Path (36 Inches Wide)
Why Angular Stone Beats Pea Gravel
Requires: Spade, wheelbarrow, 3/8" x 12" auger bit, 4-lb engineer hammer, iron rake
Smooth, rounded river pea gravel never compacts; rolling a loaded 65-gallon trash cart across pea gravel feels like pushing it through dry beach sand. Specify 3/8-inch angular crushed limestone or granite with stone dust (fines), or decomposed granite (DG). When dampened and tamped, angular stone edges lock into a firm crust that sheds water while staying permeable.
- Border Timbers (UC4B Ground Contact)5 pcs — 4x4x8 ft Pressure-Treated
- Non-Woven Geotextile Fabric (4oz)1 Roll — 4 ft x 50 ft (Drainage Separation)
- Rebar Anchor Pins (Confirmed)12 pcs — 1/2" (#4) x 18" Rebar + 6" Timber Screws
- Angular Crushed Stone (3" Depth)15 cu ft (0.55 cu yd / ~0.78 Tons)
Expand Non-Woven vs Woven Landscape Fabric Warning
Do not buy thin black woven plastic "weed barrier" strips for gravel paths—fine stone dust clogs woven plastic pores within one season, turning your path into a shallow pond. Ask for non-woven needle-punched geotextile (looks like thick charcoal felt). It lets rainwater percolate freely while keeping wet clay subsoil from pumping up into your clean stone.

Engineered for Wind & Airflow
Requires: Post-hole digger or steel post spike, torpedo level, impact driver, 3/4" scrap spacer block
Solid panel fences act like sails in a thunderstorm, levering shallow posts out of wet soil. By spacing horizontal 1x4 cedar slats with a uniform 3/4-inch gap (using a scrap of 1x-stock on edge as your spacer block), you leave 18% open area for wind passage while blocking diagonal sightlines completely.
- Set Two 4x4x8 Posts at 68 Inches On-Center: Setting posts slightly narrower than 72 inches prevents 1x4 horizontal slats from sagging at mid-span over five winters.
- Fasten Vertical 1x2 Cleats to Inside Post Faces: Screw a full-height 1x2 cedar strip down the center of each inside post face. You will fasten your horizontal 1x4 slats to this cleat rather than toe-screwing into the post corners.
- Work Top-Down With a 3/4-Inch Spacer Jig: Level and fasten the top 1x4 slat first so the top silhouette is crisp and horizontal even if the ground beneath slopes slightly.
